Ethiopia has rolled out a five-year coffee development package aimed at boosting productivity and export earnings through nine priority intervention areas. The plan seeks to raise average yields from nine quintals per hectare to 21 quintals, while increasing annual export revenue to six billion dollars. The strategy, discussed on June 27 with stakeholders across the coffee value chain, prioritises improved varieties, soil fertility management, higher planting density, better pruning and multi-stem techniques, expanded use of shade trees, integrated pest control, irrigation and fertiliser application, and stronger harvesting and post-harvest handling. It also emphasises coffee rejuvenation through modern production systems.
