Ministry, Canada Sign First Formal Labour-Mobility Deal

The government has signed its first formal agreement to train and deploy Ethiopian workers to Canada under a regulated labour-mobility scheme. The Ministry of Labour & Skills on Thursday concluded a deal with Future Fit International to prepare job seekers through targeted skills development and professional training before overseas placement. Officials said candidates who meet required competency standards will be able to access employment opportunities in Canada through the programme. Labour & Skills Minister Muferihat Kamil said the initiative is designed to equip young people with practical skills and work discipline to become productive employees abroad. She noted it is the first time the ministry has entered a structured agreement to facilitate employment in Canada within a legal framework. All registration and placement will be conducted through the national Labour Market Information System (ELMIS), according to the ministry. Canada’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Nicholas Richardson, said the agreement forms part of Canada’s broader engagement with African countries and underlined the contribution of the Ethiopian diaspora to bilateral ties. Future Fit International Managing Director Abiy Raymond said the programme seeks to build globally competitive professionals as well as facilitate overseas jobs. Officials stressed the scheme is designed to ensure legal, safe and rightsbased labour mobility.
