Ahmed Shide (left), minister of Finance, and Adanech Abebe, minister of Revenues, attended the 28th Finance & Revenue Consultative Meeting in Addis Abeba on August 30, 2019. The biannual meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance's compound in Sidist Kilo, is a forum for all regional and federal finance and revenue bosses to meet face to face and hammer out a common strategy to work collaboratively. However, they failed to meet for the last two years.

Adanech said the country is working hard to build a strong tax system, but that can only be done when the federal and regional governments collaborate and work on common goals.  Ahmed endorsed that sentiment, saying both the tax and finance side can only be strong by working together.

"The reform agenda demands accountability in our handling of public finances," he added.

All regional heads of bureaus of finance and revenue were present along with the Chairman of the parliament’s Standing Committee for Finance and Revenue, Abo Burki, as well as representatives from the House of Federations. The two-day meeting was themed "revenue for development, finance for results" and focused on tax issues on the first day, while finance-related topics took centre stage on the second day.

Experience sharing between federal and regional tax and finance institutions was one of the main goals of the meeting. Evaluating implementation hurdles and coming up with common solutions took the lion's share of the time. All stakeholders agreed to work together to bring about a harmonised national tax policy and administration.
