Ethio Telecom has launched Zemen Gebeya, a nationwide digital marketplace integrated into the telebirr SuperApp, offering a secure platform for consumers and businesses to trade goods and services. The platform includes a built-in escrow service, allowing payments to be held temporarily until the buyer confirms delivery. If a product is not delivered or the buyer is dissatisfied, the payment is returned—creating a cash-back guarantee model designed to build trust in online transactions. Launched on May 8, 2025, at the Ethiopian Science Museum, the platform is part of Ethio Telecom’s broader push to digitise commerce and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Zemen Gebeya currently features products across 14 categories, including food, clothing, and electronics, and has already onboarded over 42 businesses and logistics providers, such as Shoa Supermarket. The platform offers inventory tracking, marketing tools, and digital payment options, and is accessible to users nationwide via the telebirr SuperApp. Ethio Telecom sees Zemen Gebeya as a way to increase financial inclusion, boost e-commerce adoption, and expand market access for businesses in both urban and rural areas.
