Authority Intensifies Food, Drug Safety Crackdown

Addis Abeba Food & Drug Authority(AAFDA) removed products worth 123 million Br and penalised more than 1,200 businesses in nine-month crackdown ahead of Easter. The authority intensified inspections across 21,000 food producers, distributors, 4,000 health institutions, and tobacco-regulated sites during the current fiscal year. Officials uncovered expired food/medicines, drug sales without presprecription , unknown-origin products, and unlicensed operations, risks surging with holiday demand for food, pharma, and livestock. Substandard food, beverages, medicines, and tobacco valued at 123 million Br were pulled from markets; actions hit 1,200 food/health firms, 260 pharmacies, clinics, and professionals.
