The Birr achieved a new high in the National Bank of Ethiopia's (NBE) foreign-exchange auction, with the weighted average rate today, December 2, 2025, at 154.39 Br to the Dollar.
Close to 17 banks bid for 100 million dollars, part of a half billion dollars firepower Central Bank Governor Eyob Tekalegn (PhD) plans to deploy in a series of auctions.
Today's weighted average represents a notable jump from the 148.10 Br recorded during the October 14, 2025 auction, where 31 banks bid. Over a span of seven weeks, the Birr has gained nearly six Birr within the auction platform, revealing a tightening of market conditions as the demand for hard currency continues to exceed its availability.
