The Ministry of Education announced that the regulation for university students to engage in a year-long teaching practice following their third year of education will commence in the 2026/27 academic year.
Education Minister Berhanu Nega (Prof.) told members of the federal legislative house today that the shortage of teachers is attributed to insufficient incentives within the occupation. He conceded that teachers are underpaid, leading to an inadequacy in new educators.
Learning institutions such as Kotebe Metropolitan University, which focuses on pedagogy, have diversified their course offerings, thereby diminishing their emphasis on teacher training.
The Minister disclosed that, individuals holding degrees will have the opportunity to complete a one-year pedagogy course to qualify as teachers. University students will be integrated into the teaching force.
"They might develop an interest if they teach for one year," he told MPs.
Last year, the teacher population for students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 reached 625,000. This year, the Ministry plans to increase that number to nearly 700,000.
