Transport Ministry Launches License Replacement Drive with Two Million Plates

Minister Alemu pledged to combat forgery and ontraband

Alemu Sime (PhD), minister of Transport & Logistics, announced today, October 8, 2025, plans to replace all vehicle license plates across the country within the next year.

"The new system will restore order and traceability in vehicle identification," he said, ddressing the media during a press briefing at his office on Churchill Road.

The Minister attributed the overhaul to rising cases of plate forgery and contraband vehicle movement.

There are no fewer than 1.6 million registered vehicles, but procurement has been made for two million new plates to accommodate the increase and replacements. The redesigned plates will follow international standards, featuring a uniform format with three colors, a white base complemented by white and red elements, to distinguish vehicle categories.

So far, 50,000 new plates have arrived, though Alemu acknowledged that the digital registration system has faced delays. He disclosed the Ministry is inviting technology providers to bid to resolve the bottleneck and expects implementation to begin within two months.
