President Sahle-Worq Zewde (left) and Dima Negewo (PhD), veteran opposition leader, were in an animated discussion during a tea break at the two-day forum Addis W’eg, held at the Sheraton Addis, on March 22, 2019. Sahle-Worq gave the keynote speech at a forum organised by the Prime Minister’s Office, “to introduce a novel approach to exchanging ideas and a respectful culture of dialogue.”


Dima, one of the opposition figures to have recently returned to Ethiopia, was one of the panelists invited to speak on current democratisation efforts and the historical context in which it is taking place. The forum was attended by opposition figures, economists, business leaders, individuals and political commentators. Panel discussions on foreign policy, economic challenges and social inclusivity were also held during the event.


The discussions took place behind the backdrop of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s (PhD) upcoming one year anniversary in office, ongoing negotiations between political parties and the ratification of a historic, continent-wide free trade agreement by parliament last Thursday, March 21, 2019.
