Addis Abeba Calls U.S. Ambassador's Speech "Uninformed Assertions"

May 17 , 2024

Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to a policy speech delivered by U.S. Ambassador Ervin Massinga yesterday, criticising it as "ill-advised and containing uninformed assertions."

The Ambassador briefed the press on his country’s position on the political crisis in Ethiopia, issuing direct messages to adversarial forces to enter into dialogue. He advocated for a nationwide ceasefire and transitional justice.

Along with armed forces in the regional states, Massinga addressed the government that "a security focused approach will not solve complex political issues while calling for release of key political figures."

The authorities in Addis Abeba saw "unsolicited advise" in his statements. Released yesterday later afternoon, the federal government characterised the speech as "allegations against" the government. However, the Ministry expressed its intention to address "factual inaccuracies and inconsistencies" through engagement with the U.S. Embassy.
