More than eight million Ethiopians will need emergency humanitarian support in the current fiscal year, according to a joint humanitarian assistance assessment released today. This will require the country and the international community to mobilize over 1.3 billion dollars to pay for food and non-food aid programs.
Over 600,000 children younger than five are part of the 4.4 million people targeted for nutrition support, the United Nations disclosed. There are also no less than 2.7 million internally displaced people yet to return to their homes but in need of emergency shelter. This is despite a statement by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) in his recent appearance before parliament that 90pc of them have returned.
The majority of those in need of emergency assistance, 46pc, are in Oromia, followed by 22pc in Somali, 12pc in Amhara, 10pc in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Regional State and four percent each in the Tigray and Afar regions.
Increased conflict-induced displacements last year doubled the internally displaced population and contributed to high humanitarian response needs in 2019, says the joint statement.
