Demeke Mekonnen has stepped down from his position as a deputy chairperson of the ruling Prosperity Party (PP), following a unanimous decision by the executive committee members. His successor, Temesgen Tiruneh, currently the director general of the National Intelligence & Security Service (NISS), was elected vice president by a majority vote.
His departure from the party's senior position will lead him to lose his job as a deputy prime minister and foreign minister eventually. Speculations were abound over the past few weeks about him tendering resignations from the party and government roles.
Demeke's political journey began in the early 1990s with the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM), leading to various regional roles, including president of the Amhara Regional State, before his ascent to the federal stage. In 2008, under Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, he became the Minister of Education, and in 2012, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister under Hailemariam Desalegn.
His role came under the spotlight in 2018 when Prime Minister Hailemariam resigned. Demeke was a potential successor but stepped aside, allowing Abiy Ahmed (PhD) to assume the prime ministerial role. He continued to serve as deputy in the new administration.
