Bole International Airport has acquired an advanced counter-drone system from CS Group, a leading French information technology service firm. Marking the first installation of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, it is hoped to significantly improve the Airport’s defenses against the increasing threat posed by unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
CS Group, previously known as CS Communication & Systemes, is part of a 22-member French business delegation currently visiting Addis Abeba. This visit underscores the strengthening economic ties between France and Ethiopia, with a focus on investment in key sectors like telecommunications, infrastructure, healthcare logistics, and education, according to the French Embassy statement.
The BOREADES system CS has supplied and installed is renowned globally for its ability to early detect micro and mini drone threats. This customizable counter-UAV solution features a blend of sophisticated technologies, including either 3D or 2D radar, day/night video identification and tracking capabilities, and a jamming turret. These components are integrated into a real-time command and control system developed by CS.
The urgency for such advanced security measures at airports like Bole is driven by the global surge in inexpensive UAVs, which have increasingly led to disruptions at airports worldwide. The market for counter UAV systems is rapidly expanding, projected to surpass five billion dollars within the next four years. Counter-drone technologies for municipal airspace protection, like the system installed at Bole Airport, have an initial cost of around five million dollars, with additional annual subscription fees depending on the technology and services included.
