Milk and dairy products are found in poor hygiene and low quality, four-year research revealed.
The study by the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), in partnership with Addis Abeba, Kansas State, and Penn State universities, reported that 85pc of raw milk and 90pc of pasteurized milk is found in poor hygienic condition. Milk should contain 3.5pc protein and 3.4pc fat a litre. However, home-produced milk has 27pc less protein and 25pc less fat than the standard quality.
Despite having the largest number of cattle in Africa, Ethiopians' consumption stood at an average of 19.8Ltr milk a year, 11pc of WHO's recommendation.
