Ethiopian authorities have granted today a permit for mobile money services to Safaricom Ethiopia Plc, an international consortium led by Kenya's Safaricom Plc.
Kenya's President, William Ruto, made his first African visit after his recent election, attending Safaricom's launching held at Friendship Square. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed hosted him.
Finance Minister Ahmed Shedie announced that Safaricom's M-PESA could operate in Ethiopia, a second operator after the state-owned Ethio telecom.
"Safaricom’s success story is such an enduring innovation of how tech revolution is bypassing traditional barriers to deliver sustainable prosperity", said President Ruto in his tweet.
