Increase Tariff or Forego Petrol: Fuel Truck Association Warns

Mar 31 , 2022

Leaders of the Ethiopian Bulk Fuel Transport Owners' Association have presented government officials with an ultimatum to increase fuel transportation tariffs in the coming 10 days or see drivers stop making trips to ports in Djibouti.

The lobby group has been vocal in its opposition to a tariff set by the Ministry of Trade last year, capping payment for a single trip from Djibouti to Addis Abeba at 75,000 Br. Truck owners say rising operational, and maintenance costs render the tariff insufficient.

During a meeting at the Wabe Shebelle Hotel earlier today, the Association’s leaders claimed costs for running a single trip from Djibouti have risen to 100,000 Br.

The lobby group says over a fifth of the 3,500 trucks under its wing have already ceased operations due to the cost pressure.
