Traffic police officers in Addis Abeba are ordered to issue penalty codes via text messaging to drivers in violation of road regulations.
The Addis Abeba City Traffic Management Agency has rolled out a digital traffic penalty payment system, introducing it in partnership with Ethio telecom.
The digitalisation is welcome news to drivers, who had previously been forced to give up their driver's licenses or plates to officers as a guarantee before settling traffic fines at banks and then visiting a police station to collect their identification. The Agency has partnered with the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), Cooperative Bank of Oromia, Bank of Abyssinia and Awash and Dashen banks to facilitate online payments through the banks' branches and mobile platforms.
Drivers can also settle the payments through Ethio telecom's Telebirr mobile money platform.
Since its launch last May, Telebirr has registered 15.6 million users and conducted 42.4 million transactions worth nearly eight billion Birr.
