Finance Vet Leulseged Teferi Departs

Feb 4 , 2022

Leulseged Teferi, a distinguished veteran in the financial sector, has passed away yesterday. He was 74 years old.

Leulseged embarked on his career in finance after graduating from Addis Ababa University, in 1973, studying business administration. Five years later, he received a diploma in development banking from New Delhi Development Centre, and a certificate in treasury management from the City Bank in 1998.

Leulseged held a string of senior positions in the sector over his 40-year career, including stints as the head of major insurance firms and banks before retiring in 2020.

He served as the general manager of the state-owned Ethiopian Insurance Corporation before the industry was liberalised in the mid 1990s. Leulseged was also the founding CEO of Nile Insurance.

“He had a profound effect on the financial sector,” said Mekdes Aklilu, board chairperson of Nile Insurance. “His contributions, especially to Nile Insurance, are immeasurable.”

Leulseged's track record in banking is no less storied. He served as president of Dashen Bank, as well as commanded senior positions at the state-owned Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) and the Construction & Business Bank.

Leulseged is survived by his wife, Tsegemariam Melese, and four children.

His funeral will be held today at Sahlite Mehiret Mariam Church, near the CMC area.
