Board Announces New Polling Date

Voters in Ethiopia will cast ballots on June 21, 2021, over two weeks later than recently planned, according to the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

The Board had announced last week that it would be pushing the polling date by as long as three weeks due to time constrictions brought on by two extensions of voters' registration, which was completed last week. This leaves less than a month for the training of poll workers and the printing of ballots, the latter contracted to a printing company on Dubai. Officials at the Board say they need 10 more days to see through the completion of the printing of secretive ballots, and four weeks for the distribution of electoral materials to over 47,000 polling stations.

Over 106,000 new poll workers in 20 cities and 641 polling stations still need to be trained, in addition to the 138,655 that are already active.

More than 36 million voters registered before the deadline last Friday, slightly less than the 36.8 million recorded during the national elections six years ago.

The Board has also decided to conduct city council elections in Addis Abeba and Dire Dawa on the same day, though they were initially scheduled to take place a week after the rest of the country had gone to the polls.
