A total of 12 companies, including prominent global telecom operators, have shown interest in securing full-service telecommunication licenses in Ethiopia. Nine of them are telecom operators, while two are non-telecom operators and the remaining was an incomplete submission.
The Global Partnership for Ethiopia, a consortium of telecom operators comprised of Vodafone, Vodacom and Safaricom, as well as Etisalat, Axian, MTN, Orange, Saudi Telecom Company, Telkom SA, Liquid Telecom and Snail are the telecom operators that submitted an expression of interest for the licenses. Kandu Global Telecommunications and Electromecha International Projects are the two non-telecom operators that showed interest.
A litter over a month ago, the Ministry of Finance and the Ethiopia Communications Authority launched the expression of interest process for the issuance of two new full-service telecommunication licenses with a closing date of June 22, 2020.
Interested bidders were requested to provide information on their organisational structure, global operating footprint, details of countries of operation and number of mobile phone subscribers. The two winning companies will get a 15-year license that will enable them to provide combined services for mobile, internet and fixed calling.
