The U.S. Centres For Disease Control Ethiopia (CDC) and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) have started conducting a COVID-19 lab test at the Institute’s Reference Lab.
The Centre has also assigned two senior lab experts to assist at the national Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 testing laboratories.
The Centre, which has invested more than 64 million dollars in Ethiopia over the past two decades, is working in tandem with the Ministry of Health, the Institute, and other public health partners in the country on diagnosing and containing the virus.
The CDC has assisted the national laboratory with the development of a national testing algorithm for COVID-19, the verification of testing kits, the implementation of quality assurance and the procurement of supplies for COVID-19 testing.
Ethiopia, which was sending COVID-19 samples abroad, now has the capacity to conduct over 4,000 tests daily and is in the process of opening up more laboratories in the capital and other regional states. The CDC and the Institute are also working as part of the national emergency COVID-19 response team in providing support, epidemiology, surveillance, infection prevention and planning.
The collaborative efforts are aimed at making diagnostic services more accessible to protect Ethiopians from COVID-19 and helping prevent the further spread of the virus.
