Members of parliament have voted in favour of the state of emergency with only one vote abstaining during a session not broadcast live as the case had been with previous such sessions.
Media crews from the state-owned Ethiopia Boardcasting Corporation (EBC) and the Ethiopia News Agency (ENA) wire service were allowed to record the session held for the first time outside parliament. It took place inside the recently refurbished Office of the Prime Minister across from parliament on Lorenzo Teazaz Road. Both outlets are expected to air the session later on today.
The decree will stay in force for five months. Parliamentarians will also vote on a supplementary budget bill and loan agreements signed to contain the spread of COVID-19.
