Paintings around the walls of the French Embassy depict a dancing Axum Obelisk parallel to the Eifel Tower. The obelisk migrated back to Ethiopia after a sixty-eight-year stay in Italy in 2006. While the UNESCO-registered heritage made its way back home, thousands continued to journey past the harsh seas for the prospect of a better life in Europe. The Mediterranean has claimed the lives of 441 people between the months of January and March, this year. Economic depravity and political instability are cited as the primary causes driving droves into migration from Africa according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
