Ethio telecom has signed a landmark agreement with Ericsson at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, advancing the country’s digital transformation. Under the three-year Next Horizon Strategy, 1,500 mobile sites will be upgraded with advanced 4G and 5G technology. The modernisation will replace legacy infrastructure, boosting coverage, quality, and capacity. Ethio telecom will add 2.8 million 4G connections, raising the total to 4.1 million, and expand LTE services to 157 new towns, bringing the total to 276, while population coverage rises 45pc to 85pc. The initiative prioritises digital inclusion, with 75 rural areas receiving tailored mobile solutions and 502 3G sites upgraded to 4G. The expanded 5G network will support national digital platforms, including telebirr, Zemen GEBEYA, and Znexus, underpinning a modern digital economy.
