Ethiopian Airlines Foresees $50m eCommerce Hub

Ethiopian Airlines Foresees $50m eCommerce Hub

An eCommerce hub, fully dedicated to e-commerce logistics operations, is underway with a cost of 50 million dollars. The Ethiopian Airlines Group's Cargo & Logistics Services division foresees the construction hub to be erected on a 15,000sqm of land adjacent to the existing facility at Bole International Airport. The project was developed in response to growing demand but was constrained by many problems, from inadequate e-payment systems to security risks and technology adaptation. The Airline partnered with logistics companies, delivery service providers, market platform owners, and regulatory agencies to overcome these limitations. When completed, the facility will handle 150,000tns of packages in a year with a sorting capacity of over a million packages a day. Under Abel Alemu, the Ethiopian Cargo & Logistics Service is one of the seven business units within the airline group. It operates to 66 international destinations in Africa, Europe , Asia and the US deploying 13 aircraft. Managers representing eCommerce service providers such as Purpose Black attended the event held at the Skylight Hotel last week. Abel said that the eCommerce logistics service is hoped to align with the national move towards the digital economy. He stated that the engagements with global eCommerce companies reduce storage and simplify the electronic payment process, attracting airlines, integrators, and airports to increase market share and expand the business, especially in the African market.
