The restructuring towards the country's pioneer Addis Abeba University (AAU) saw the Minister of Education appointed as its chancellor to serve as high ambassador, execute appointments of presidents and oversee operations while the CEO of Ethio telecom rises to the rank of chairing the board. The appointment of Minister Berhanu Nega (Prof) and Frehiwot Tamiru came after the Council of Ministers approved the bill to make the state-owned University autonomous a few weeks ago, as part of ongoing reform in the higher education sector. The autonomy of the University, which will take full effect in the coming academic year, will entail strict requirements for student admission, tuition fees for financially capable students, and the University's political and economic independence. University exit exams which saw only 40pc of 155,000 senior year students obtain the minimum requirement for getting an undergraduate degree and testing modalities that saw three per cent of over 900,000 students get passing marks to enter higher education are notable reform instruments championed by the Education Minister in the ended year.
