Tikur Anbessa Hospital Lauds Half a Century of Service

Tikur Anbessa Hospital, the largest specialized hospital in the country, celebrated 50 years of service at an event held this week. The college of health science located in the hospital compound is the premier higher institution for various health-related studies, functioning as part of Addis Abeba University and accounting for a quarter of the human resources at the nation's first higher learning institution. It works closely with the Ministry of Education and receives 80pc of its funding for construction from the Ministry. The college also accounts for the bulk of the 2,800 research papers published by the University. The Minister of Education, Berhanu Nega (Prof.), one of the speakers at the event heralded the hospital as foundational to the nation's health sector. State Minister Ayele Teshome (PhD) also attended the commemoration ceremony reiterating the sentiment that both the hospital and the college had played pivotal roles in getting past the Covid-19 pandemic and other health disasters faced by the nation. The hospital has over 1,000 beds and more than 3,400 employees, and currently going under renovation and expansion projects.
