Ethiopia has stepped up enforcement against alleged illegal fuel activities, resulting in the seizure of 250,221 litres of benzene and 198,432 litres of diesel, according to Kassahun Gofe (PhD), Minister of Trade & Regional Integration. Of the confiscated fuel, stock valued at 48.66 million Br has been released for legal sale, with proceeds directed to government revenue. A total of 613 individuals have been detained in connection with the operation, including trade office officials, regulatory experts, fuel station owners and employees, group leaders, and security personnel. The minister said the coordinated campaign aims to ensure fair and orderly fuel distribution, while urging distributors and the public to use petroleum responsibly amid ongoing global supply pressures. Authorities said the enforcement drive will continue, as the government moves to curb illegal trade, prevent artificial shortages, and safeguard the regulated fuel supply system.
