Addis Abeba City’s Revenue Authority collected 25.3 billion Br in revenues, of which 17 billion Br was from employment income taxes. Revenue collected from value-added taxes (VAT) accounted for 7.2 billion Br, while the rest came from municipality fees. The Authority planned to collect 26 billion Br in these nine months. The Authority’s performance this year has shown a 19pc increase compared to the same period last year. In this fiscal year, the Authority plans to collect 33.5 billion Br from taxes. A study by the Authority shows that the city has the potential of collecting up to 60 billion Br but always falls short because no less than 40pc of the city’s economy operates in the shadows.
