Today is a world of a motivational era where we seem to gain anything in life quickly. Seminars could be the place for that. They portray that the universe is complacent in providing anything to those who seek sanguinity and remain optimistic. It would have been nicer if life were that simple. It is much more complicated.
This optimistic ideology portrays self-development as an exciting progressive course that comes from nothing but enlightenment. The truth is the opposite. The idea suggests that most life accomplishments often involve traumatic and negative experiences.
Over time, more people are buying into the concept of being limitless, which is inaccurate, dragging themselves into even tricky challenges in life. They may say believing in anything less than the self-fulfilling ideology is a weakness. They boldly preach that we can overcome obstacles and shift towards the desired direction. They ignore that all have limitations in life.
Life should be about discovering the uniqueness and the ability to work hard and navigate the good life. This makes us cautious about our activities and decisions. Being an optimist is great but does not fulfil all the desires. It is about making decisions for ourselves and discerning what is good and harmful in life.
It seems these realities do not sit well with some people.
My relative is one of the many who shared these ideas. She struggles with translating her wishes into reality, believing this would take nothing but optimism. She used to attend this conference that convinced the many success is not about hard work but instead staying positive. It is to wait for our wishes to materialize by themselves. Over the years, my relative has developed a bizarre fantasy of becoming a leader of a foreign country. The motivational speakers made her believe that nothing is beyond any limitations.
Now in her mid-40s, none of the wishes has come to reality. Sometimes, frustration took the better of her; the depression resulted in her attempting suicide a few times. Undoubtedly, it is devastating for the family to see a vibrant and confident woman going down the hill and living an endless delusional life.
None of the many psychiatrists she had visited was able to bring solutions.
My relative is only one of the many experiencing the same mindset impeded from living their potential. Discovering one's limitations is a good thing. No matter how hard we try, we cannot be good at everything.
One of life's most essential things is acknowledging our abilities and recognizing our limitations. Identifying those could lead to a purposeful life. We cannot excel in everything how hard we try. Not all dreams come true, but standing in a better position is a choice and a commitment.
Understanding and making peace with limitations is vital. There are opportunity costs in everything. Making ourselves feel the limitations allows us to accept failures and learn from them instead of being stuck at something.
Life gets a lot easier when letting the old dreams go. Capitalizing on the potential in life is fully invested in what we are good at. Most importantly, it would become apparent when fulfilling the dream and meeting the desire in life.
