Departing Electoral Boss Believes She Restored Faith in the Board

Jul 1 , 2023

Birtukan Mideksa, the chairwoman of the National Election Board, claimed to have "restored faith" in the electoral institution, posting her sense of accomplishment on her Facebook page where she announced the decision to resign after four years in office. The first woman to lead one of the most contested federal institutions, Birtukan saw the legal and organizational reforms of the Board which carried out the six national elections. The Board failed to conduct elections in over 100 constituencies due to insecurity, and voters in Tigray Regional State remain unrepresented in the federal Parliament. "The public be the judge," she said in a statement announcing her tendering a resignation letter to Parliament on June 12, 2023. "I believe to have succeeded in restoring faith in the Election Board and guiding political parties."
