Ethiopia Joins World Heritage Protection Committee

Ethiopia joined a world heritage protection committee as a member for the next four years during a conference held on November 27, 2019. To join the committee under UNESCO, Ethiopia secured 125 votes out of the 168 countries that cast the ballot, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ethiopia, with the other members, will work toward ensuring continental heritage registration and protection is given the right consideration. Following the vote, Ethiopia will be working as a member of the two major bodies of UNESCO, the executive board and the heritage protection committee. There are 21 members under the committee of UNESCO that implement heritage protection, usage of funds for the protection of world heritage, financial support to countries and registration of world heritages. The country has eight traditional and one natural heritage registered under UNESCO.
