Four Refugee Camps Get New Classrooms

Nov 30 , 2019

Eighty-four classrooms built in four refugee camps in Gambella Regional State through UNICEF financing were inaugurated on November 29, 2019. The classrooms were built in Nguenyyiel, Terkidi, Kule and Jewi refugee camps with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education, regional education bureaus, the Agency for Refugee & Returnee Affairs, UNHCR, UNICEF, Plan International and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. The funding was secured from UNICEF's two-year "Education Can Not Wait" programme with a total of 15 million dollars in investment. The programme aims at expanding educational opportunities for children affected by emergencies and the protracted humanitarian crisis in refugee camps and host communities in Gambella and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. The funding is administered under UNICEF’s financial, human resources and administrative rules and regulations, while operations are run by UNICEF’s own independent governance structure.
