Corporation Introduces Flat Rate Train Tariff

Aug 17 , 2019

Ethiopian Railway Corporation revised the train tariff for the Addis Abeba Light Rail Service to a flat rate of four Birr for all trips. Becoming effective on August 18, 2019, the new tariff amendment aims at creating a secure control system to modernise the ticket system and to minimise the cost to publish tickets. For the past three years since the light railway became operational, the Corporation was charging two, four or six Birr depending on the distance of the trips. The decision comes after the Corporation conducted research and held discussions with the Addis Abeba Transport Bureau to implement consistent pricing. Addis Abeba Light Rail Transit, which gives service for 120,000 people a day, earned three million dollars during the first nine months of the past fiscal year by transporting 29 million passengers.
