Ethiopian Electric Power plans to replace the water pipes of the Grand Renaissance Dam. Two bottom outlet water pipes that are six metres in diameter and 79m in length have deteriorated and have to be replaced, according to Kifle Horo, project manager of the Dam. The new pipes replacing them are expected to last up to 100 years. EEP has also undertaken other quality assurance investigations to identify other problems related to electro-mechanical and metal work performed on the Dam. It was determined that no issues were found except welding work, which have already been fixed, according to Kifle. The Dam is expected to be completed in 2022 and will generate 6,400MW, which will make it the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.
