The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has scrapped interest charges for customers financing new electricity connections through its credit scheme, lowering the cost of gaining access to the grid. Under the previous arrangement, customers who took more than six months to settle connection costs paid interest ranging from three per cent to nine per cent. Repayment periods extended up to 24 months. The revised terms remove the interest entirely. The scheme brought 19,231 new customers onto the grid within two weeks of its launch. It allows households unable to cover connection costs upfront to spread their payments over time. EEU plans to connect 1.1 million new customers during the 2026 fiscal year, compared with 664,505 customers connected in the previous fiscal year.
