The International Monetary (IMF) Fund is set for a leadership change in its African Department, with Abebe Aemro Selassie stepping down after years in the role. Mauritanian economist Zeine Zeidane will take over in May 2026, appointed by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Abebe leaves behind a tenure marked by active engagement on Africa’s debt challenges, pandemic response support, and broader policy coordination across the continent. Zeidane, a former Mauritanian prime minister and central bank governor, brings extensive IMF experience, including senior roles in the Middle East and Central Asia Department and earlier work within the African Department.
