ILO Calls for Minimum Wage Ratification

Ethiopia was requested to ratify minimum wage and violence harassment conventions put forth by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for member countries. FanFan Rwanyindo Kayirangnea, assistant general director of ILO Africa, stated that ratification of the conventions is important to ensure the improvement of stable and sustainable working conditions. She stated that ILO has been working toward workers' rights amid the global and domestic challenges Ethiopia was the first African country to join the ILO in 1923. The 100th anniversary of Ethiopia's membership was celebrated with a National Labour Conference held at Haile Grand Hotel last week. Minister of Labor & Skills, Mufariat Kahmil, indicated a minimum wage study under the Ministry is nearing completion and will be up for discussion. The conference saw the attendence of Kassahun Follo, president of Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Union, Getahun Hussein, president of Confederation of Employers Federation and Dawit Moges, former vice president of the Confederation of Employers' Union.
