Ethiopia Outlaws Alcohol Broadcast Adverts

Parliament has legislated a law banning tobacco smoking in public places and advertisement of alcoholic drinks in broadcast media outlets. The new law also prohibited selling alcoholic drinks to persons under the age of 21. It also bans smoking within a 100m radius of offices, health institutions and youth entertainment areas. Initially, the draft was tabled to parliament to ban the advertisement of alcoholic beverages between 6:00am to 11:00pm. But after a fierce debate by the MPs, the legislation has fully banned the advertisement of alcoholic drinks on broadcast media. The proclamation was drafted jointly by the Food & Drug Administration Authority, the Ministry of Health, the World Bank and the World Health Organisation.
