City officials have launched an initiative to take measures on trucks that spill dirt and gravel on asphalt roads during commutes between construction sites. According to Birhanu Kuma, communication director at the Addis Abeba Traffic Management Agency, they have partnered with the Addis Abeba Police Commission to make freight transports moving around carrying unstrapped containers accountable. He said they have posed a risk to road safety while soiling and discolouring of the streets. Constant maintenance is required for over 5,000Km of asphalt extending across the country, as damages arise from parallel infrastructure developments due to miscommunication between government bureaus and overloaded vehicles.
