The Council of Ministers today approved Ethiopia’s membership to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), which aims to create a free, single continental market for goods and services. ACFTA, one of the largest trade agreements since the creation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), attempts to create a single African market. Ethiopia’s decision and track record of advocating Pan African causes will effectively bring the vision of an integrated Africa closer to reality, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister. Two months ago a committee composed of professionals from the ministries of Trade, Finance, Revenues and Foreign Affairs led by Mamo Meheretu, Chief Trade Negotiator and senior adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), was in Cairo for negotiations to join the ACFTA. The consultation was held during the seventh ministerial meeting.
