A man pushes a cart around the Mebrat Haile condominium in a bid to barter clothes for everyday home items like dishes and buckets. Condominiums are subsidised communal housing projects which began close to 2 decades ago when a dollar was 9 birr. The houses are distributed through a lottery mechanism to people who have saved the required amounts. The last lottery raffle two months ago saw close to 26,000 people becoming home owners. Thousands remain who have saved up for nearly two decades despite not receiving homes yet.
