Electric Utility Reports 26b Br in Revenues

The state-owned Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) generated over 26 billion Br in revenues during the last financial year. Close to 80pc of the revenues were secured from energy sales. The enterprise's executives had forecast 23 billion Br in energy sales for the year. It earned six billion Birr from the extension of electric lines for new customers. However, the company fell far short of reaching the 1.2 million new customers it had planned to serve, managing only 300,000. As of 2020, the EEU had 50,000 high power users, around three million low power or domestic users, and approximately 500,000 prepaid card users. Less than half of the population has access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency. EEU executives forecast 43 billion Br in revenues for energy sales this year.
