Kenya Inks Power Export Deal

Ethiopian Electric Power and the Kenya Power & Lighting Company Plc have signed a power purchase agreement for the sale and purchase of 200mw of energy in the first phase of a power export deal. The signatories expect the export agreement to increase to 400mw in the near future. Export is set to begin in the coming November. It is part of the Kenya-Ethiopia Electricity Highway Project. Construction of a 1,068km-long power transmission line between the two countries commenced in 2016. The World Bank provided a 684 million dollar loan for the project, while the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the French Development Agency provided 338 million and 118 million dollars in funding, respectively. The governments of Ethiopia and Kenya contribute 32 million and 88 million dollars, respectively.
