For the first time since the early days of the pandemic in 2020, the wards of Eka Kotebe General Hospital have no patients admitted for COVID-19 treatment. The final patient left the Hospital on May 5, 2022, after making a full recovery, marking what could be the beginning of the end of two years as a COVID-19 quarantine and treatment centre for Eka Kotebe, which was initially built to serve as a psychiatric treatment centre. Health officials transformed it into a COVID-19 centre not long after the first case was detected in the country in March 2020. Over 470,000 more cases have been identified in the years since, with the official death toll sitting at 7,510 by the end of last week. Over the past couple of months, mortality and infection rates have fallen to their lowest levels since onset. The Ministry of Health's daily COVID-19 reports show no deaths more often than not. The developments are a relief to health professionals, who have administered close to 29.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the public since the Ministry began its jab campaign a year ago.
