The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) is embarking on the construction of a 36-storey headquarters to be built in Kirkos District along the way from Mexico Square to the Sarbet area. The EEU has budgeted 1.2 billion Br for the construction of the building, which is expected to be completed within four years. The headquarters will sit in a 10,000sqm compound while the building itself will rest on 4,500 sqm. The project design work was carried out by another state-owned enterprise, the Ethiopian Design & Supervision Works Corporation. The foundation stone-laying ceremony was held last week in the presence of Ahmed Shide, minister of Finance, Shiferaw Telila, head of the EEU, and Getahun Mekuria (PhD), board director at the EEU. The EEU is also planning to begin the construction of 35 regional and district offices. It has more than 23,00 employees and serves over four million customers. Over the first quarter of this fiscal year, the EEU collected 4.12 billion Br in utility fees.
