The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has partnered with a local fintech company to launch a series of e-commerce platforms for booking and payments in the hospitality industry, a collaboration that positions the developer to compete with international online booking services. The state-owned giant has been working with EagleLion, a technology systems provider established last year, to launch three platforms offering online payment options to clients through Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, CBE accounts or CBE Birr. One of these is a hotel bidding platform that organisations and clients can use to float tenders for hotel reservation and conference services. The CBE earned close to three billion dollars in remittance and export trade while transacting 529 billion Br through its digital channels last year. It serves 31.4 million accounts with a network of 1,759 branches and over 3,000 ATMs. EagleLion is involved in digitalisation projects across several sectors, including mining and health, but is known for developing remittance and booking systems such as CashGo and GuzoGo.
