Gov't Looks to Import Wheat, Sugar

Aug 28 , 2021

The government is in the process of importing 400,000tn of wheat, aiming to ease skyrocketing inflation, which hit 26pc last month. Around 18,000tn has already arrived and the remaining wheat is expected beginning next month. Moreover, 54 million litres of edible oil and 200,000tn of sugar will be also imported in an effort to stabilise the market. Several efforts to import wheat this year have failed, with a bid for the procurement of 400,000tn of wheat, opened on April 20, 2021, cancelled due to the failure of bidders to meet the technical requirements. Another bid for the same amount floated by the United Nations Office for Project Services in June was also scrapped. Ethiopia imports an average 1.7 million tonnes of wheat annually.
