Ethiopia Receives 1.7m Doses of COVID-19 Vaccines in a Month

The United Kingdom has donated half a million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Ethiopia, bringing the total donations the country has received this month to 1.7 million. The doses were handed over by the UK deputy ambassador, Alex Cameron, to Minister of Health, Lia Tadesse, during a ceremony at Addis Abeba Bole International Airport on August 17, 2021. The UK made the support through the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX), an initiative launched to help low-income countries vaccinate their citizens. At the beginning of the month, the Ministry received 1.2 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine from the US, bringing the total number of vaccines the United States has donated to Ethiopia 1.6 million. So far, over two million Ethiopians have received the COVID-19 jab.
