Project to Create Jobs, Sustainable Waste Management in Modjo

A project that aims to engage 4,000 unemployed youth and establish a sustainable waste management system in about 12 tannery industries in Modjo Town was launched last week. A consortium of organisations inlcuding People in Need (PIN), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and Solidaridad (SOL) are the project owners while LIDI, ELIA and Solidaridad Eastern and Central Africa Expertise Centre are associates in implementation. Improving skills and access to self-employment opportunities in Modjo and its surrounding areas and bolstering the capacities of tanneries and other leather actors in good manufacturing and waste management practices are some of the goals outlined in the project. Additionally, the project will involve 10 micro, small and medium enterprises. The government has previously forecasted that employment in the leather industry would grow by 85pc through 2025.
